What is Svaroopa® Yoga?

Tension tells you that areas in your body and mind are less active. Where you are less alive, you have less joy, because life itself is joy-full. Svaroopa® yoga opens you up to more aliveness, more laughter, even more joy. Svaroopa® yoga gives you the bliss of your own being, which is why it is called svaroopa.

In a nutshell, Svaroopa® yoga is a different kind of yoga! It is not an exercise…if you want to exercise, you're better off going to the gym. However, you can get the benefits of exercise without all the work of exercise!

Svaroopa® is a Hatha-based yoga that focuses on releasing the tension in the muscles along your spine. When this happens, your spine decompresses, your have more space to breathe and your internal organs can function properly–you have more room in your body and you feel better!

Another phenomenon that happens...

As your body opens on the physical level, it also opens on the energetic level. So, you start to feel peace of mind and a sense of well-being beyond the body…you experience bliss. And, this is one of the rewards of doing Svaroopa® yoga.

Yet, there is more...

Many practitioners of Svaroopa® will tell you that there is more than the physical and mental benefits of the yoga. They say there is a feeling or sense of spirit that they never had before, a sense of being connected, of finding a sense of Self. 

The word "svaroopa" is from the Sanskrit language. It refers to a specific state of consciousness that develops through quieting the mind. This state is described in the ancient yogic texts as bliss and is our true nature.

Yoga’s goal is the bliss of consciousness, which arises from within. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras #1.3 promises, “You will experience svaroopa when yoga stills your mind.” Svaroopa® yoga delivers on this promise through the power and subtlety of spinal release.

We are generally too busy to experience this part of ourselves and it is challenging to quiet the mind enough to taste this inherent state of peace. One of the hallmarks of the Svaroopa® yoga practice is to advance the student's direct experience of their own internal bliss. We call the practice "svaroopa" because we are using the body as a tool to quiet your mind and experience your own true nature…bliss.

When the word Yoga is mentioned, most people immediately think of some physical practices fro stretching and stress reduction. This is one aspect of the Yogic science, but actually only a very small part and relatively recent in development. The physical Yoga, or Hatha Yoga, was primarily designed to facilitate the real practice of Yoga–namely the understanding and complete mastery over the mind.
